Improve Response Rates

Higher response rates provide a broader representation of student perspectives and result in more useful feedback.

The strategies below have been shown to increase participation in Student Course Feedback surveys.

1. Explain Why Feedback Matters

Students are more likely to participate when they understand how feedback is used.

Consider discussing:

  • How you use feedback to improve your course
  • Changes you have made based on past student input
  • Why student perspectives matter

Let students know when surveys are open and how to access them in Canvas.

You may also direct students to the Student Course Feedback page for additional information.

2. Offer Class Time

When appropriate, consider setting aside time during class for students to complete the survey.

Best practices:

  • Provide time during the final weeks of class
  • Share instructions for accessing the survey in Canvas
  • Step out of the classroom to allow privacy
  • Remind students that responses are confidential

If students encounter technical issues, refer them to scf@utah.edu.

3. Use a Canvas Announcement

A brief reminder during the survey window can significantly increase participation.

Consider posting a Canvas announcement that:

  • Explains why feedback is important
  • Reminds students where to access the survey
  • Provides the survey window dates

You may use or adapt one of our sample announcement templates.

4. Incorporate a Reflection Assignment

Some instructors include a brief reflection assignment near the end of the term and remind students to complete the course feedback survey as part of that reflective process.

You may:

  • Create a graded or ungraded reflection assignment
  • Encourage students to submit their course feedback during that time

Important: Instructors may not grade students based on survey completion, as surveys are anonymous.

You may use or adapt one of our sample assignment templates.

5. Include Information in Your Syllabus

Including a brief statement about Student Course Feedback in your syllabus can set expectations early.

Consider noting:

  • When surveys typically open
  • How students will access them
  • Why their participation is valuable

Survey dates vary by session. See the Survey Calendar for specific term dates.

Sample Syllabus Language

You are welcome to use or adapt the following statement:

Student Course Feedback
Your feedback helps improve this course and supports thoughtful teaching across the University. I review student feedback carefully and use it to refine course design and instructional approaches. A survey will be available near the end of the term. You can access your survey through Canvas under Account → Course Feedback. Participation is voluntary and responses are confidential.

Important Notes

  • Participation in Student Course Feedback is voluntary.
  • Instructors may not offer extra credit or grade students based on survey completion.
  • Surveys are anonymous, and instructors do not see results until after final grades are submitted.
